Battery storage commissioning jobs

Commissioning is where a battery storage project proves it works. It is also one of the hardest stages to staff, because the people who can energise, test and hand over a system safely are in demand across the whole electricity sector.

What commissioning teams do

Commissioning takes a constructed site from mechanical completion to commercial operation: pre energisation checks, high voltage switching, testing of batteries, inverters, transformers and protection, controls and SCADA integration, grid compliance testing with the network operator and handover to operations.

Typical roles include Commissioning Manager, Commissioning Engineer, high voltage Authorised Person, SCADA and Controls Engineer, Protection Engineer and Grid Compliance Engineer.

What employers ask for

Evidence of energising and testing utility scale assets, ideally storage or inverter based plant. Recognised high voltage authorisation under the owner's safety rules. Familiarity with grid code compliance testing in the relevant market. Integrator or OEM experience is valued, because so much commissioning depends on the supplier's software and procedures.

Projects such as Blackhillock in Scotland, a 200 MW, 400 MWh system that Wärtsilä announced as operational in March 2025 for Zenobē, show how commissioning now includes advanced grid services as well as basic energisation.

Where demand is coming from

Every project in construction will need commissioning within months. Our Project Radar shows tracked projects by stage worldwide, with the roles each stage typically needs. Those are potential requirements, not confirmed vacancies; current roles are listed on Opportunities.

Common questions

I commission solar or wind. Can I move into storage?

Often, yes. High voltage, protection and grid compliance experience transfers well. Battery and inverter specific training closes most of the gap.

Are commissioning roles permanent or contract?

Both. Owners and integrators hire permanent teams, and many projects add contract engineers for peak periods.
